Writing up your PhD and Preparing for the Viva | The University of Edinburgh

The data are all in, the analyses completed. Several years of your life have passed by in a blink. All you have to do is submit your final thesis and then defend it in your viva, writing up your phd thesis. There are already many useful chunks of advice on the web about how to write your thesis. This piece is specifically about avoiding some of the things that I know irritate PhD examiners.

I am collating a selection of their views, received while researching this topic, which I will share if I get the appropriate permissions. When you write your final thesis, remember that this is the ONLY way we judge you until we meet at the viva.

We do not know you. Remember the examiner will usually still receive a hard copy of your thesis. Yes, I know it sounds archaic, but there it is. So print it out and read it yourself before you submit it, to make sure Word has not done weird things with page breaks and tables.

Some people suggest reading it aloud to yourself, partly to be sure it makes sense, and partly to check sentences are not too long. Your institution will have basic rules on font, spacing, margins, structure, writing up your phd thesis, word limit. READ them and stick to them. The maximum word limit is exactly that — it is a limit, not a target. Less is usually more. Be concise. Examiners are not impressed by flowery, verbose use of language.

Use, but do not rely on, spellcheck. Some mistakes will inevitably slip through, writing up your phd thesis, but do your very best not to let them. Be especially vigilant in the Abstract, and the first pages. First impressions are as important in writing as they are in meeting people.

If you get off on the wrong foot, it is almost impossible to recover. Ensure tables and figures are clear, fit onto the page, have good headers and keys, writing up your phd thesis. Text and tables should be complementary and help the reader take away whatever message you want to convey. Try to position the relevant tables and figures close to the text in which they are mentioned, to avoid us having to flick pages back and forth.

Within the basic Abstract, Introduction, Lit review, Method, Results, Discussion, Conclusion framework, try and make it easy for your reader to follow your thinking.

Use connecting sentences. Provide conclusions to your arguments. Use clear headings and subheadings and make sure the content of the text beneath them actually relates to the heading. Make your Appendix easy to find your way around as well, by giving it a clear table of contents and page numbers.

It is handy to have that content list close to the start of the Appendix, not just at the front of the thesis. You can ignore the real timeline when it suits you. A thesis is not like writing up your school experiment.

You do not have to write things in the same order you did them, writing up your phd thesis. The Abstract sets the tone for the thesis, and maybe the only bit people ever read in the writing up your phd thesis, so it not only needs to be bereft of typos and errors, it also needs to read well. Unfortunately you are usually so cream-crackered by the end of a PhD that you write it when your energy levels have ebbed and all you want to do is get rid of the damn thing.

Resist the temptation to submit until you have been through several drafts of your Abstract — I promise you it will keep getting better. Tell me early on what problem you were hoping to solve and why it matters. If I have to plough through 60 pages of lit review before I get any clue what your research questions were about, I shall not think well of you. Be clear in the introduction what the thesis is about, what it is intended to achieve, and to what field it is intended to contribute.

I should not have to say this, but recent experiences indicate I do — a descriptive literature review is not enough. You need to demonstrate critical thinking, ability to synthesise information, ability to present both sides of an argument and reach a conclusion. As well as justifying your choice of design, the Method section needs enough information that I could replicate your study if I wanted.

Tell me exactly how they were randomised, and why that method was chosen. The same applies to your data analysis method section. The devil really is in the detail. Nearly all Results chapters are dull to writing up your phd thesis. Use text to break up the endless tables and figures in quantitative research.

Summarise your main findings clearly for the reader. Do not simply repeat your Results. Revisit your original research questions and say how you have answered them, writing up your phd thesis.

State your main findings at the beginning. Discuss your methods and hence the validity of your findings i. do you trust them? Discuss similarities and differences between your own work and previous work. Be critical of yourself and of others.

Highlight any new or unexpected findings — discuss their validity. Explain the novelty and importance writing up your phd thesis what you have done, but do not overconclude — be sure you can defend any claims you make. Recommendations for further work are good, but try not to overdo them. Some limited speculation is OK provided you are clear when you are doing this. Bring it all together. Tell the reader the take home messages.

Keep it real. Avoid writing up your phd thesis in this section. Beware making claims that are not supported either by your own data, or by others data. We will be checking. Remember, the examiners always want you to do well. It is no fun for anybody when someone who has devoted all that time and energy into submitting a PhD thesis does not meet the required standard.

A brilliant performance in a viva can sometimes rescue a tricky situation, writing up your phd thesis, but a poorly written thesis will always require extensive revisions, writing up your phd thesis. It really is worth taking extra time at the end even though you are tired and fed up with it to make sure all your hard work can be appreciated. It is the only thing to do with it. It is never of any use to oneself.
